Yuna Matsuura

My art is a visual celebration of self-expression and self-love. By reflecting my own emotions and experiences through bold colors and storytelling, I hope to inspire others to embrace themselves, find confidence, and create their own meaning. Each piece invites endless personal stories, crossing boundaries of identity, time, and place.

“Welcome to GRINGO'S”

Digital painting on iPad

18 in × 24 in

03/09/2025

I captured everyday places I encountered for the first time. As a foreigner in this town, everything felt new and exciting to me. What is normal for local people appeared special through my eyes. One place that really stood out was a hidden spot, where the bright colors of the buildings and the atmosphere left a strong impression on me. I wanted to capture that feeling in my paintings.

The word "gringo" refers to someone from outside. That's how I often feel, and it allows me to see things from a different perspective. I use that point of view to highlight the beauty and uniqueness in everyday places. Through this work, I want to share the joy of discovering new places and meeting new people. Even in daily life, there is something special waiting to be noticed.

“Beyond Joy”

Beyond Joy represents my journey of artistic and spiritual growth. Through studying abroad and creating art, I have discovered a deep sense of peace, freedom, and fulfillment—something I had not realized while living in Japan. Since coming to the U.S., I have been given the time to truly engage with my creativity, for which I am deeply grateful. This piece captures emotions that go beyond simple joy, reflecting my true passion for drawing.

“Secret Cookies Party”

Digital painting on iPad

This painting reflects my daily routine as a part-timer. After finishing my shift, I often take leftover cookies from the school cafeteria. I enjoy the small joy of counting my daily happiness, and there’s something fun about imagining the stories behind those late-night leftovers. Through this series, I wanted to create surreal narratives based on my imagination. These cookies, my late-night treat, are a special part of my routine, and I’ve connected them to my artwork as a source of inspiration. The paintings are a reflection of how small, everyday moments can bring unexpected creativity and delight.

“Showa Retro”

"Showa Retro" blends the nostalgia of Japan’s Showa era with the personal evolution of living in the U.S. This series explores identity, self-expression, and the intersection of past and present, using familiar cultural elements to bridge the gap between two worlds. The work invites viewers to reflect on their own stories, sparking conversation and connection across generations and borders.

“Loud”

Digital painting on iPad

This piece visualizes my quiet personality and the creativity I hold within. It conveys a message I discovered while studying abroad: when I express myself through art, I no longer have to fear the world.

"Ties of Time"

Acrylic on canvas

10 in × 10 in

February 2025

This artwork is an appreciation to my father’s years of hard work and retirement. Using four distinct yellow neckties as a motif, it reflects his unwavering sense of responsibility, resilience, and the support he has given our family. Each tie carries a shade of nostalgia, reminding me of childhood moments.
